Learning about WhatsApp

Apparently, lack of information also provides some information

so i still need to do the Janet disc homework (that's due today by midnight PST)

  1. Interesting. So there is a way to know if someone's blocked you on WhatsApp. Their profile picture disappears.
  2. (It's not a surefire test, because it also happens when they simply don't have a profile picture.)
  3. Also, fun fact: while the iPhone [/iOS version of WhatsApp] refreshes the profile picture every time you click on it, the Mac version of WhatsApp refreshes a user's profile picture once when you start the app, and doesn't poll the server again for updates until you quit and restart the app (or, depending on implementation, the server might also push if they update the picture).
  4. Regarding (2): but you can check which of those it is if you have another WhatsApp account:
    1. save their number as a contact
    2. go to "create new message"
    3. scroll down/search for their contact. if their picture shows up on the new phone, then you're screwed. yep, blocked. if not? (not sure yet; maybe people who don't have you in their contacts don't show up if you're new? not sure yet. actually, about to find out by adding Joshua P to my contacts on the second phone… oh, never mind. they do show up with a photo. wait, so that means that she didn't block me. but yet I inadvertently just learned about a loophole in WhatsApp's blocking system lol)
